Toxic Staff vs Toxic Management: Sometimes the Problem Isn’t the Guard. Sometimes It Is.

A site’s not working. The staff are disengaged, the mood is tense, and things just feel off. The property manager is frustrated. The guards are resentful. Complaints are flying in both directions. So what’s the problem? Is it the team, or the leadership? The truth is, it might be both. And the only way to fix it is to be willing to ask hard questions.

When It’s the Staff

Let’s be honest. Not every guard is a good fit. Some don’t show up. Some bring baggage. Some resist coaching, ignore site protocols, or bring down the team around them. That kind of behaviour is toxic. It puts everyone at risk, residents, coworkers, and your site.At Paragon, we hold our people accountable. We document performance. We intervene early. And we remove the wrong fit before it becomes your problem. But that’s not the whole story.

When It’s the Management

Sometimes the issue isn’t the guard, it’s the culture we’ve built around them.

  • Are we actually listening when they raise concerns?
  • Are field leaders present and engaged, or just checking boxes?
  • Are we clear with expectations? Or just reactive when things go wrong?
  • Are we treating them like professionals, or like liabilities?

If we want guards to perform, we need to show them that performance matters. That starts with how they’re led. We’ve had to own this at times. We’ve changed supervisors. We’ve restructured teams. We’ve pulled out of sites that weren’t the right fit.Because accountability cuts both ways.

The Paragon Commitment

We don’t pretend to be perfect. But we commit to:

  • Transparent dialogue when issues arise
  • Swift, professional intervention for toxic behaviour
  • Re-training and mentoring when the potential is there
  • Leadership reflection when something’s not working
  • The courage to make changes, even if they’re hard

We’re not in the business of blame. We’re in the business of better. Let’s talk. If you’re stuck in a cycle of complaints, disengagement, or tension, we’ll help you figure out where the problem really lives, and what to do about it.
